Trafalgar Egg

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution's City of London branch commissioned Theo Fabergé to celebrate the bi-centenary of Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, in a Limited Edition objet d'art of 50 for the world market.
Collectors' purchases provide funds for a new Tamar class lifeboat City of London III for Sennen Cove in Cornwall.

The guilloche enamel and sterling silver Egg, in rich cobalt blue, is adorned with motifs from Auguste Mayer's painting 'Redoubtable at Trafalgar' featuring the vessel from which Lord Nelson received his fatal shot. To the reverse, the Naval Gold Medal with which Nelson alone was awarded three times.

The surprise: the bust of Nelson himself, modeled on the Flaxman sculpture and wearing the hat and coat he wore at Trafalgar, all presented in gold and silver.
