Mayflower Egg by Theo Faberge

Inspired by the internationally acclaimed artisan Theo Fabergé, grandson of Romanov Imperial Jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé, the Mayflower Egg commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims daring voyage across the Atlantic. In 1620, the Pilgrims departed on the sailing vessel Mayflower from Plymouth, England reaching land at Cape Cod, then sailing on to what became to be known as Plymouth and Plymouth Rock. Today, more than 30 million people can trace their ancestry to the 102 passengers and approximately 30 crew who sailed on the Mayflower for a new life in the New World. Many will be taking part in the celebrations happening in England and the United States with the Mayflower Egg being the ultimate tribute to this historic occasion.

The Mayflower Egg is created from crystal, silver, karat gold, and jewels. Part of the design´s inspiration came from the priceless Waldseemüller Map of 1507, now housed in the United States Library of Congress, which first named “America” over 500 years ago. The Egg is surmounted with a finial depicting two heraldic cartographers´ dolphins from this map, sculpted in vermeil. The Egg itself is made from mouth-blown, hand-carved Bristol blue crystal. Its lid is decorated with 23 karat gold stars, guiding the Pilgrims across the Atlantic. The lower half of the Egg features hand cut fluting and is supported by columns intertwined by Theo´s signature swags in vermeil and accented by four faceted rubies, representing the 400th Anniversary. Highlighting the nautical theme, a replica anchor hangs from a swag to the front of the Egg, offset by a faceted diamond symbolic of the sun´s rays striking the Mayflower on its journey. The design is enhanced with Theo´s distinctive ornamental turning, both on the central support to the Egg and base. The base is underpinned by stylized dolphins as the Egg´s feet. A silver disk beneath the base bears the Egg´s serial number and Theo´s signature.

On opening the Egg, the surprise is an exquisitely detailed miniature replica of the Mayflower. Crafted in sterling silver with 18 karat gold overlay, the vessel sails towards America from right to left, signifying the journey from England. The miniature Mayflower floats on a silver sea and the surprise insert bears British hallmarking. Limited edition of 200, with 100 reserved for fundraising in the United States.
